Caution - narrow channel and rock ledges, miles 349-352

Description:
This stretch is known as the “Rock Pile” due to the rock ledges along both sides of the channel from ICW Mile 349 to around Mile 352. A number of charted daybeacons mark the most worrisome of the rock ledges, many of which are visible only at low tide. Not all of them are marked, so keep a sharp watch. Check on VHF Channels 13 or 16 to see if any tug or barge traffic is passing through the area. Boaters should exercise caution. Stay in the channel and follow the markers.

There is 9.3 MLLW on the Bob423 track through the Rock Pile as of 2/16/2024. The least depth has not changed in 10 years.

At low tide (Myrtle Beach) and southbound, drawing 5.5', we passed through the "rock pile" area with 5-8' depth under our keel. The rocks are wide and flat and clearly visible at low tide on either edge of the channel. The Pile zone began at day mark G 15A and ended at G 17A. There were two small R nuns (16A and B) and a G barrel (17) at the southern section of the Pile to guide us. We stayed in the center of the channel and had no problem.

Just stay in the channel between the red and green markers and you will have no problems. Before transiting, call ahead on VHF 16 to see if there is commercial traffic coming. Some barges take up the entire width of the channel so plan ahead.
