Rideau Canal, ON, CAN

The Rideau Canal is the oldest, continually operating canal in North America. The Rideau Canal’s southern entry is at Kingston and continues for 125 miles to Ottawa and is part of Parks Canada.
Most of its original technology is still intact and most of its lock stations are unchanged from 175 years ago. Parks Canada staff operates the locks by hand, just like on the Trent-Severn and Chambly Canals. Visits to such historic sites as the gristmills in Delta and Manotick remind us of the importance of canal’s early contributions to Canada’s economic growth and prosperity.
