Anchorage Review for Jackson Creek South Branch

Draft: 4.5'Overall Rating:Holding:Wind Protection:Current Flow:Wake Protection:Scenic Beauty:Ease of Shopping:Shore Access:Tucked in during some unpredicted 30 mph winds - the river was full of fetch coming in! But nice and calm inside, great holding and had at least 14 other boats with us and still plenty of room.
The free dock right here is difficult to get ashore - it's quite tall, and there's no ladders. High tide is your best bet, or scurrying up the shoreline (be careful, crumbing gravel and steep!).
We found the ~1 mi dinghy ride over to the Maritime Museum worth it. Free dock to use there, trash access and even fresh water spigots. Nice short hiking trails and things to explore around, and the museum is only $5 and worth a visit.
We were able to take a walk down to the hardware store to get some needed items (they stock a lot of boat stuff!).View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer

Anchorage Review for East River - Put in Creek

Draft: 4.5'Overall Rating:Holding:Wind Protection:Current Flow:Wake Protection:Scenic Beauty:Ease of Shopping:Shore Access:Cell Service:Came here to attempt the shallow creek dinghy adventure to get to Mathews for the post office and Food Lion. And it was a success! Just go at a rising tide, and know when you need to return - and it's very passable. No engines allowed for the last narrow bit, so be prepared to row.
Cute little kayak dock at the end to tie up to. And then shopping just a couple blocks away. Also grabbed an early dinner at Mi Casa Mexican before the tides turned.
Anchorage itself was decent, in the middle of a neighborhood and next to a public dock for shore access. Anchor was muddy when we raised it, and a couple crab pots to maneuver around.View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer

Anchorage Review for Hampton River - North of Bridge

Draft: 4.5'Overall Rating:Holding:Wind Protection:Current Flow:Wake Protection:Scenic Beauty:Ease of Shopping:Shore Access:Cell Service:Great anchorage for exploring Hampton! The dinghy dock is easy to access, and right on the sidewalk to get to the Air & Space Museum, brewery and carousel. And the carousel is a MUST do - only a buck to ride this lovingly restored 1920s gem.
The dredging barge was still between the bridges during our stay in May 2025.View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer

Marina Review for Riverwalk Landing Piers

We stayed on the newly installed moorings, and they are HUGE. A little difficult to figure out how to use their double horn cleats (no penant), but think we managed it.
As others have noted neither the mooring field or the marina itself is protected from anything but S/SW winds. We timed our visit for light S & SW winds and were mostly comfortable. Except when tidal swells come up the river, those south winds can pin you to the beam for a very uncomfortable few hours!
All and all though, we enjoyed 3 nights (currently still free, but dockmaster seemed to indicate they may be going back to charging), and loved exploring Yorktown.View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer
