  • Nav Alert comment on FL: Intersection of Intracoastal and Florida Barge Canal, excessive shoaling/sandbar

As an update. Water level has gone up at least a foot, maybe close to two since my initial report. Also heard from a dock mate, though I haven't been able to verify, some dredging was done - but it seems only the north (Red) side of the Canal (between R12 and G11) was cleared ... south (Green) side still 'sandy' (of note, the southside, in my observations, has always been the shallow side). Observed a large Alexander Yacht about to enter the Barge Canal from the AICW as we came across the FL 528 bridge earlier today (Monday the 26th) and later saw the yacht trainsting east on the canal and then enter their facility just to the east of Harbortown Marina, so certainly enough water for them to get through ... and they were big (60 footer at least, so I'll guess at least a 5' draft).

  • Lock comment on Cape Canaveral Lock

Contact lock tender on VHF 13 "Canaveral Locks". Provide vessel name and direction of travel. Report that you will stand by until next green light. Coast Pilot says to use south wall, but a shorter north wall section is also available. You will use your own lines and must be secured both forward and aft throughout the lock cycle. There is not much of a raise/drop even at High/Low water, but lines must be tended during the flood drain which is done by cracking open the doors. Dolphins will occasionally share the lock chamber with you, and seasonally you often will see manatee - so be ready to put your engine(s) in neutral as you glide past them.

Clean restroom/showers and laundry facilities. Pool, and dog park are perks. Good prices on gas and diesel. Ideal location between ICW and Port Canaveral. Excellent hurricane hole.
