The city of Toms River is an historic port dating to 1624 at the head of the river. The Toms River Yacht Club, founded in 1871, is the second oldest in the country. Traditional captains’ houses line the street and the town is working to preserve its maritime history. The Toms River Seaport Society has acquired several historic boats and other artifacts for its maritime museum and waterfront display and there is an annual Wooden Boat festival, usually during July. Call the Society at 732-349-9209 for details.
