Sanibel, Fla. — My family loves kayaking and birdwatching, and there are few better places to do both — especially in the middle of winter — than at the JN “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge.
Sanibel Island, on Florida’s Gulf Coast near Fort Myers, is perhaps best-known for its world-class shelling. It’s also a popular destination for visitors who appreciate the terrific restaurants, shopping and low-rise beachfront resorts.
Sanibel is a treat for nature lovers, too. About two-thirds of the narrow, 12-mile long island is preserved as parkland or nature preserve.

The Ding Darling refuge encompasses about 5,500 acres of the island’s mangrove forests, marshland and shallow bays along Pine Island Sound on the island’s north shore.
