Cobalt Boats has expanded its Surf series with the new R4 Surf, a 24’3” (7.39 m) wake surfing boat. She’s powered by a Volvo Penta forward-facing sterndrive and has wake-shaping appendages, a ballast system and Cobalt Custom-Wave Technology that allows for up to 20 savable rider profiles.

Like all boats from the Neodesha, KS, based manufacturer, the R4 Surf has top-shelf amenities and fit and finish. In addition to the SurfGate technology that was patented by Cobalt parent Malibu Boats, the standard-equipment list includes a six-speaker audio system linked to a Bluetooth stereo with an iPod/USB/MP3 port, a Garmin glass cockpit with dual screens, convertible seating and more.
Starting at the bow, the R4 Surf has deep seating with backrests on the front of each console. There’s storage under each bottom cushion plus an anchor locker in the forepeak. Moving aft into the cockpit, the port console has a locking glove box with additional space below. The backrest can be set for conventional forward-facing travel or converted for observing the action going on behind the boat.

To starboard, the helm has a captain’s seat with a flip bolster and all navigation, engine and surf data are displayed on twin 8” (20.32 cm) Garmin multifunction displays. An upgrade to 10” (25.4 cm) screens is an available option. The helm also has illuminated sealed accessory switches and a wireless cell phone charger. Taking a closer look at the screens, Cobalt’s Custom Wave Technology lets a driver program up to 20 rider profiles that can be edited, removed, or renamed by following screen prompts. The driver can switch from left to right waves when underway and adjust the trim, speed and more.
