What to Do

Hampton, VA

Start with a boating tour aboard Hampton Queen as she cruises through four centuries of history, from the 1607 founding of Jamestown up the James River, to state-of-the-art submarines and aircraft carriers berthed at Naval Station Norfolk across Hampton Roads harbor. Learn that a “roads” is short for roadstead, a nautical term for where ships lay at anchor in protected harbors.

The Virginia Air & Space Science Center, which traces humankind’s intrepid voyage from the bounds of Earth and beyond, delights us all with its education, outreach, and events. See Hampton’s connection with NASA and the role the city played in the first voyages to the moon.

Arrive by Boat

Safe Harbor Bluewater is the perfect landing pad for a stop-over, quick fix and fuel up for those on a schedule. It's just a mile from the bustling Hampton Roads Harbor with deep water and protected floating docks. There is ample slip space and spacious new facilities for groups, boats, and yachters looking for transient, seasonal and annual docking within Hampton's city limits.

The Docks at Downtown Hampton is located within walking distance of Downtown Hampton’s historic district, restaurants and local attractions. The Docks also offers complimentary bicycles for visiting boaters and are creating a new “garden” where you will be able to pick your own veggies and herbs, depending on the season. Customs House Marina is next to the Docks and may have space available for transients. But call ahead to confirm.

Old Point Comfort Marina located on historic Fort Monroe across the I-64 corridor is another good option if arriving by boat. The anchorages in Mill Creek and Hampton River will also get you access to all the city has to offer. Dinghy docks are available. Check reviews and details on the anchorages in Waterway Guide before arriving, though, due to ongoing construction and access considerations.
