Double Breasted - East Canal

  • Lat / Lon: N 27° 11.457' / W 078° 15.920'
  • Depth: 5'-8'
  • Tide: 2.0'-2.5'
  • Description:

The East Canal anchorage is tide restricted to vessels drawing less than 4’ because the mouth of the canal has silted over the years. Once past the sandbar at the entrance, the canal widens and deepens to over 10'. In a pinch a vessel drawing up to 5.5’ can make its way into the canal by favoring the north side, but once inside the canal you are committed to staying for at least a full tide cycle. The best holding is found as the canal widens west of the small island that divides the canal. There is +8’ of water on either side of the island but the deepest water is on the north side.

For a vessel drawing 4’ or less, the canal is a viable alternative to the Sandy Cay anchorage to ride out a cold front, but for prevailing conditions the anchorage offers little that can’t be found elsewhere. Also, during the spring and summer months the small, black saltwater mosquitos that live inside the canal can be fierce!

DISCLAIMER: Before committing to an anchorage, you should confirm that the location is not governed by a regulation that may conflict with your plans. An increasing number of states and municipalities are enacting laws that define where and how long you may anchor.
