Ambergris Cay
- Location: Berry Islands
- Lat / Lon: N 25° 39.944' / W 077° 49.789'
- Depth: 8'-12'
- Tide: 2.5'-3.0'
- Description:
Ambergris Cay is the largest of a group of three islands due west of Soldier Cay and south of Whelk Rock. It has a long sandy beach facing east towards the ocean, making it a good place for shelling. With its eastern exposure, however, is an ever-present swell that can turn the anchorage at Ambergris from relative calm into a boiling lee shore within a few hours.
The openness to the east is balanced by near total protection from the west, making this one of the few places in this part of the Berrys to ride out the westerly portion of a strong winter cold front. When combined with a short move to Soldier Cay as the wind shifts into easterly quadrants when the cold front passes, it is possible to ride out heavy weather in relative comfort.
DISCLAIMER: Before committing to an anchorage, you should confirm that the location is not governed by a regulation that may conflict with your plans. An increasing number of states and municipalities are enacting laws that define where and how long you may anchor.
