Kennebec River winds past deserted Fort Popham. The upper Kennebec River is more placid than at its mouth and provides ample opportunity for explorations; however, currents run swiftly its entire length. It is navigable for 40 miles to Maine’s capital, Augusta. Bath, one of the country’s leading shipbuilding centers, is 10 miles up the river.
