Been sailing to this large protected anchorage for 20+ years from CT. Plenty of depth but there is one small low spot at entrance to the anchorage which bigger sailboats might need to watch at low tides. Thick black mud for holding. Never had any problem anytime with my 4’4” draft. In 2019 the free showers & bathrooms in the Park District cabin were closed for renovation, but the big dinghy dock had been put back in & there was an alternate dinghy dock attached to the boat launch ramp when the main dock was hauled out. Great shopping, hardware store, groceries, restaurants & a beach (Veterans Park) within walking distance. Quiet, peaceful town. LIRR train stop 2 blocks away, goes to Greenport & NYC. S2 Buses also run nearby to Orient Point & Riverhead, but maybe not after 6pm. Harbor generally quiet, but Strong ‘s marina has been getting louder over the years with live music at night & new bright lights that make it less peaceful, but they quiet down around 10 pm. The public bathrooms, showers & charcoal BBQ always made this a great stopover for boats on the hook. Hopefully they’ll be open again 2020. Will update ASAP.

There is 360 protection in the anchorage. There are trees along the edge to break the wind somewhat. The dinghy dock at the head of the anchorage is gone. The pier out to where the docks used to be is still there but the floating docks need to be returned. You can still get to shore using the boat ramps but it’s not as convenient.

It’s a short walk of less than two blocks into town where there are many shops and restaurants. There is a 7/11 type store a little farther next to a laundromat and even a supermarket about 1/2 mile farther along the main road heading west.

Today, we are the only boat in the anchorage. I’m seeing 80 Mbps over Verizon LTE.
