Nav Alert comment on FL: Intracoastal Mile 894.0, Bennett Causeway Bridge, reduced vertical clearance
Comment by: Ted Stehle on May 26, 2022
Vessel Type: Power
LOA: 50'
Draft: 3.6'Submitted by David Swann:<br /> Passed under bridge northbound on Friday May 13, 2022 at 2 hours past low tide with tide board showing 64 feet on south span. There is inactive construction on north span with netting and tarp underneath. We successfully passed under this bridge 5 previous times and need 63 feet. Passed the south span with a light touch on vhf antennae. This time our wind instruments and anchor light caught the netting on the north span and fell to the deck or in the water. Our lightening diffuser was also bent over. Although the bridge is rated at 64 feet at MHW, the construction has lowered the usable air draft. There is a small orange Sign stating "overhead construction" but no warning of the lower air draft on the north span. You may want to consider an alert for this. Any sailboat needing 62 feet or more under this 65 ft bridge May hit and have damage similar to us.

Free Dock Review for Wilmington City Docks - Market Street Landing
Reviewed by: Ted Stehle, Ecstasea, on Apr 9, 2022

There is no overnight docking here. We were chased off the dock early evening by the Parks Department employees, after having stayed overnight the night before. I discussed with them the recorded message at the phone number listed by someone who identifies himself as the dockmaster in which he promises to call back. They told me that the number was to a mobile phone which had been cancelled and did not understand how there could be a message given by that number. There is no dockmaster. On the bright side, the docks are available for day use with no fee. Some of the power pedestals work. We found Wilmington itself to be a fun place.

Nav Alert comment on Erie Canal, closure between Lock E-29 Palmyra and Lock E-30 Macedon - Update
Comment by: Ted Stehle, Cloud Nine, on Jul 11, 2021
Vessel Type: Sail
LOA: 42'
Draft: 5.0'A dam is leaching silt and they have lowered the water level. There is a plan to fix it but not sure when. We have a draft of 4'10"" and barely made it through. The boats especially sailboats with their masts down are stacking up on either side of the canal. We were traveling with another sailboat that draws 6 feet and we were told at lock 28 they will have to turn around and go back to the Oswego canal into Lake Ontario and take the Welland canal. The only notice we could find after the fact was a one line sentence on May 13 in the Nycanals.gov site that vessels with 5 feet or under will be let through until further notice. Not good communication. You may be able to help with a notice here.

Nav Alert comment on SC: High Water Alert, Upper Waccamaw River
Comment by: Ted Stehle on Jun 5, 2020
Vessel Type: Power
Draft: 0.0'The coast Guard has issued the following MSIB:<br /> <br /> The Captain of the Port Charleston (COTP) has established a temporary safety zone on all waters of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AICW) from mile marker 375 near Enterprise Landing to mile marker 366 near Fantasy Island Bridge. Entry of vessels or persons into this zone is prohibited unless vessels proceed at speeds that do not create a wake. State and Federal authorities have determined that wakes from vessels transitting the area create increased hazards associated with high waters present in the area. <br /> <br /> This rule is effective from June 4, 2020, through June 30, 2020, or until waters recede and conditions allow for safe navigation, whichever occurs first. The duration of the safety zone is intended to protect personnel, vessels, and the marine environment while this area experiences high water conditions. <br /> <br /> This MSIB can be viewed at https://homeport.uscg.mil/port-directory/charleston. For questions or concerns regarding this MSIB, please contact Sector Charleston Waterways Management Division at (843) 323-7761 or the Sector's 24-hour Command Center at (843) 740-7050.
