Can your American cruising boat travel to Cuba? Yes!

For the first time in many years, American cruising boats have reached Cuba – legally! A Cuba travel organization and an American yacht club arranged for a group of participants of the annual Bone Island Regatta to add a leg from Key West to Havana this year. The regatta is open to cruising sailboats only.

Regatta participants started out May 13 from Sarasota, Naples and Tampa to finish in Key West. Just days later, the Sarasota Yacht Club received approval for participants to sail into Havana. The yacht club has tried in past years to get approval for a regatta to Cuba, but could not get the required permission from the U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Asset Control. With the thawing of U.S/Cuba relations, participation in a sportfishing tournament and a Hobie-Cat regatta was also recently approved (see related WaterwayGuide.com article: Cuba opens up to U.S boats – bit by bit). Sarasota Yacht Club is planning another regatta to Havana for April 2016.

TravelGuideCuba.com was the sponsoring organization, which states, "If you would like to legally sail or yacht to Cuba we can set up similar tours for you. We are proud members Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba and would be glad to assist any boaters." The successful "visit" is documented – with lots of photos and a video:

In an historic event nineteen brave Americans set sail at 2pm on May 20th from Key West to the Hemingway Marina in Havana Cuba as part of the Bone Island Regatta.   Alice Petrat of the Sarasota Yacht Club was the brainchild for this competition and worked tirelessly over the last two years to make this event possible.  She was able to receive final Coast Guard approval on May 15th.  To make their stay in Cuba in compliance with the US laws TravelGuideCuba.com was honored to be their sponsoring organization.  We produced and executed an itinerary using the recently updated people-to-people laws.

There would be a few setbacks along the way but all four boats made it successfully to the island on May 21st in the mid afternoon...

Wally is correct. The situation is not as simple as many of us would like to believe. More is required than the US President making a speech. There are laws to change (Congress) and regulations to change (the Administration at State, Treasury, and Commerce). So far the relief that is in place only applies to commercial aircraft (scheduled and charter). Private aircraft and boats have additional requirements. See http://www.treasury.gov/resource-center/sanctions/Programs/Documents/cuba_faqs_new.pdf in particular paragraph 22 on page 6. Please note this is an official US Government source. I'd like to visit Cuba. Without appropriate permits (which should now be easier to get) you cannot now go to Cuba legally by private boat. Lets all keep pressing our elected representatives to fix that.

FYI: The US House voted yesterday to keep the old restrictions on travel to Cuba. The Republican-controlled chamber voted 247-176 to keep a Cuba-related provision in a transportation funding bill, which would block the easing of restrictions that Obama declared in January which dropped the licensing requirements. However, Obama said he'd veto the bill because of the Cuba travel issue. Always a moving target!

We're going to Cuba after we finish the Great Loop next year in November, '16 with our 40ft. trawler. Don't know yet how and with who and at this point don't care. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it. If you really want to do something, DO IT. We'll overcome any obstacles when the time comes.

do you think they'll be any more regattas of this fall and/or winter going to Cuba would love to go?

This is great to see, but we still need to see the requirement for any kind of licensure to travel by boat, gone. At a minimum, the application procedure needs to be simplified. Also, readers need to know that they do NOT need a travel agency to make this happen. That will add considerably to the costs involved - although, their experience undoubtedly simplifies the procedure.
