The largest of the US Hospice Regattas returns this October in its traditional three-day format, October 1 to October 3 on the Rappahannock River, above the bridge. This popular event in Irvington, VA, featuring up to 140 of the most beautiful, classic design monohulls on the Bay, will be based at Rappahannock Yachts on Carter Creek and co-hosted by the Rappahannock River Yacht Club and the Yankee Point Racing and Cruising Club. Check out the details at www.turkeyshoot.org or Yachtscoring.com.

Thanks to the kind sponsorship of Waterway Guide Media a new annual Corinthian Cruising Trophy will be awarded for the best performance of a cruising boat.

The regatta is open to monohulls 18 feet and longer, with a design over 20 years old. October 1st there will be a welcoming party featuring the band “Rip Tide” playing from 7:30 to 9:30 PM, followed by two days of racing. Saturday Oct. 2nd, the various fleets grouped by ratings, will race a traditional triangular course and on Sunday the 3rd, a Pursuit Race, the slowest starting first which results in most of the racing fleet finishing closely together for a beautiful Regatta finish.  The event will follow relevant CDC guidance in effect on the dates of the Regatta.

The top award for the Regatta is the Virginia Spirit Trophy, for the overall winner, won last year by L’Eaudanse, owned by Timothy Scheid. The John and Carole Jean McConnico Yacht Club Trophy is awarded to the yacht club having at least three racing entries and the lowest combined racing score, and any entry could win the Most Beautiful Boat award. The best performance by a wooden boat will win the Doug Power Wobbly Compass Award.  A new honor introduced for 2021 is the Corinthian Cruising Boat Trophy, which recognizes the best sailed cruising yacht displaying top effort and finest sportsmanship.  Yachts currently entered are from across the Bay and represent eighteen yacht clubs. The awards presentation will be held Sunday afternoon.

Now in its 26th year in support of our two area Hospice groups—Hospice Support Services of the Northern Neck and Riverside Hospice Agencies serving Gloucester and Tappahannock, the Regatta has become an important fund-raising cornerstone and is a combined effort of many local volunteers and businesses. In 2020, with only a one-day race, the event provided a total of $17,000 to the two Hospices. Come join the activities on the water or on land, rain or shine.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary will provide a restricted area for the racecourse, but local boaters can view the race from a safe distance, or many prefer viewing from the foot of the bridge at Greys Point.
