New book “The Hampton Album” looks at Hampton University’s early, and sometimes controversial, beginnings

During World War II, Army courier Lincoln Kirstein was stationed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He ventured into a Washington, D.C., bookstore one day and came across an interesting find: A scuffed, leather-bound photo album filled with images of African American and Native American students studying plant life, brick masonry and Greek history at a place called the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute.

The book didn’t list an author or a purpose, but Kirstein bought it anyway. He carried it back with him to his pre-military life in New York City.
