The harbor at Racine has been a major shipping port since the 1800s. A multi-million dollar fisherman's walkway at the breakwaters provides a 0.5-mile long, 25-foot wide concrete walkway allowing safe access to the lakefront for fishermen and walkers alike. A bike path along the Racine shore connects with paths from Milwaukee to Chicago. Three miles north, accessible by bicycle (or car) is Wind Point Lighthouse (4725 Lighthouse Dr.), built in 1880. This is the oldest and tallest working lighthouse on Lake Michigan. A small maritime museum on the lighthouse grounds is open during the summer months. Many attractions are located downtown, close to the marinas. Download the Downtown Racine App for detailed information.
For a complete change of pace, visit the large (28-acre) Racine Zoo located directly on the lake and featuring animal exhibits, a playground and a miniature train at 2131 N. Main St. (262-636-9189).
