Alexandria, just above the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge on the Virginia shore, is a worthwhile stop going to or coming from DC. It sets a fine example of an old port city where the public waterfront has long been the center of commerce. Right off the boat, you step onto Waterfront Walk, which runs the length of Alexandria’s Old Town frontage on the Potomac River. A beautifully preserved historic district, Old Town Alexandria is the heart of the city George Washington once called home.
