Manteo to Norfolk

The Dismal Swamp Canal completed a much-needed deep cleaning this summer and is now deep, debris-free and not at all dismal! The man-made canal, which opened in 1805, has a fascinating history involving the Civil War, the Underground Railroad, and even a few illicit trysts and duels. It was dug completely by hand and took 12 years to complete. There is absolutely nothing to see here now except wildlife…Lots of wildlife! At least 47 species of mammals may be spotted, including bears, bobcats, river otters and bats, in addition to the run-of-the-mill deer, raccoons, beavers and fox. Over 200 species of birds call this home, and there are also tons of snakes, turtles, frogs and lizards. Download the fun wildlife checklists and keep track of your discoveries.
