Shell Hunting with Horses
Located just 3 miles offshore is the Cape Lookout National Seashore, which runs from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. Anchor at Lookout Bight (another 9 miles to the south). There’s not much to do here except watch the wild horses, fish and look for shells, including Knobbed Whelks, Bay Scallops and Scotch Bonnets. (Visitors are allowed to collect up to two gallons of uninhabited shells per person, per day for non-commercial use.) If feeling energetic, you could climb the 207 steps to the top of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. Self-guided tours are $8.00 and begin every 15 minutes (seasonal). You will be joined by ferry loads of tourists from Beaufort and surrounding areas; time your visit accordingly. Vessels may anchor for a total of 14 days in water within the boundaries of Cape Lookout National Seashore.
