Swansboro to Belhaven
From the viewing platform above the shop floor of the NC Maritime Museum’s Watercraft Center, you can watch shipwrights at work as boats take shape, from start to finish. Located on Taylor’s Creek (Front Street), the museum preserves the rich boatbuilding heritage of North Carolina. The Center offers wooden boatbuilding classes for all levels and all ages, including many one- and two-day hands-on courses. Build your own kayak, stand-up paddleboard or half model, among other offerings. Wooden boat models are constructed here as well. Pre-registration required; sign up at thewatercraftcenter.com/boat-building-courses.
You can’t be in the area and not eat at the historical Sanitary Fish Market on the waterfront in nearby Morehead City. Established in 1938 as a 12-stool restaurant, today it’s an East Coast institution and ICW “must see.” Their fresh broiled and fried shrimp and flounder combinations remain the most popular dishes. See a menu at sanitaryfishmarket.com.
