Fernandina Beach to St. Simons Island
The Palace Saloon and Florida House Inn
Originally named the "Shipcaptain's Bar," Florida’s oldest tavern has been a bar since 1903. (Prior to that, it was a haberdashery.) The original bar was a true "gentleman's establishment" with complimentary towels for patrons to wipe the foam from their mustaches and solid brass spittoons for those who enjoyed a good chew with their beer. Check out the original carved mahogany bar, brass cash register, hand painted wall murals, tin ceiling and inlaid tile floors. The bar is open every day from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Be sure to try the Pirates Punch, made from their own secret recipe. See history, specials and more at thepalacesaloon.com.
Leave the boat at anchor walk to Florida House Inn, originally a boarding house dating from 1857. Take up residence in a rocking chair on the wide front porch and watch the comings and goings or hide out in the serene courtyard, by the unique mermaid fountain. The Mermaid Bar and Leddy’s Porch (restaurant) are on site. See more at floridahouseinn.com.
