Settlement Point, Grand Bahama Island, Indian Cay passage

At Settlement Point, Grand Bahama Island there is one lone marker in the Indian Cay passage and that is on Indian Cay Rock. Navigating the passage requires going slow and paying very close attention to the charts. If heading to the Abacos there is another stake at Barracuda Shoal which should be left about 0.5 mile off the port.

Grand Lucaya Canal, hazard to navigation, sunken car!

On Wednesday, a local property owner, checking the condition of his seawall along the southeast side of the Grand Lucaya Canal, found a CAR sunken slighly east of mid-channel of the main canal. A pass at low tide with a boat equipped with a depth sounder marked a little more than 2' over this sunken car. Based on the location of the car as of Wednesday, it is assumed that the car was carried to this point by the current -- and the imminent danger is that the current could carry the car into mid-channel making it even more dangerous for boaters.

The police were notified and promptly responded, however they officers were unable to provide any information about when the car would be removed. As of This writing (Friday evening) the car is still in place, but no markers have been put on it to advise boaters of its location.

A word to the wise: if you traverse this area of the Grand Lucaya Canal, GO SLOWLY and have an observer on the bow.

Many thanks
Stephanie DiBelardino
