On July 10, 2010 My faimily and friends were travaling this section of the ICW between marker 160 and 162 and hit a sand bar in the middle of the channel. There was no warning that there was shouling in this area at that time. Please use extreme caution when navigating this area. You do not want to start your day like we did. My vessel is 32 ft in length. Thank God no one was seriously injured. Sincerely, George Pfeiffer

14 September 2009

Cape May Canal, shoaling across from ferry docks

While entering the canal from the Delaware River in May, the ferry was leaving the north side docks. I gave a bit of room to the south side and ran hard aground in 3-4 feet of water. Apparently, the ferries never stop spinning their props while tied up and have shoaled up the channel to the south side of the canal. There are no floating buoys to indicate this problem. Don't go far off the centerline to the south.

Another cruiser reported the same issue in August.

NJICW Cruising Report

Yesterday M/V Tucandu, draft 3.5 feet, made the New Jersey ICW run from Cape May, NJ to Atlantic City. We left Utsch's Marina at 11:00AM, about 1 hour after low tide, and arrived in Atlantic City at 6:30PM.

We used Towboat US as a resource. They suggested we leave the ICW at Ocean City and run straight across Great Egg Harbor Inlet, rejoining the ICW just past the fixed bridge at Longport. This avoids the troublesome Broad Thorofare cut that has hung up many others. We made sure we stayed in the channel where water depths were mostly over 6 feet under the bottom. We did not run aground, but did touch bottom in one area (see below) where we misjudged the channel. The trip was very interesting, passing by many waterfront residential and resort areas that are much different from what we encountered on the southern ICW. Here are some points others coming behind us may find helpful:

When leaving Utsch's, be sure to turn left and stay 50 feet off the breakwall to R14. DO NOT turn right, even though it looks like the channel on that side is closer.
NJ ICW Channel is very narrow with abrupt shoulders in many places. It's important to pay close attention to avoid drifting outside the channel because it's common to have only one foot outside the channel.
The entire run from R402 to R382 is shallow and very narrow. Be sure to hug R384 and R386 when making that turn.
Pay special attention to the VERY sharp turn into west Channel at G215 & G217. It's easy to miss.
While there are a lot of fishermen in the channel, we found that they generally left room to get thorugh, or would move to the suide to let us through.

We're currently anchored in the Rum Point anchorage in Atlantic City, very quiet with good holding and lots of room. If you choose to use it, be sure to stay in the middle of the entrance channel, then follow the private markers on the starboard side back into the basin. We've decided not to move this holiday weekend due to the large number of "nutballs" on the water. We'll watch the Gucci fireworks show from this anchorage and wait until Monday make the final run up to Manasquan and NYC Monday.

Have a great 4th.

Hello, I saw somebody mention that they anchored in Rum Point anchorage in Atlantic City. How do we find this anchorage? Thanks!

NJICW Cruising Reports

June 15, 2009

We came from Cape May to Atlantic City last week. Then AC to
Manasquan yesterday. We draw 3 feet. We left about 3 hours before
high tide, watched the markers carefully (always with someone steering
and someone watching the markers). We never saw less than 7 feet
under the boat (although we were really watching the channel and
markers). We thoroughly enjoyed the trip, as we got to see NJ from
the back side. Yes, there were some no wake zones, but we were not
going fast anyway. A bigger concern for us was all the little fishing
boats congregating in the middle of the channel, since that is where
the fish are..

We ran the inside of the New Jersey Coast last week in two inside legs
and one outside to New York. Not bad really, Mostely 6' water on mid
to rising tide. Hated all the fishermen in the channel but I broke
the golden rule and travelled on a weekend. Watch the corner at 421 /
423. Stay to the bank. Its counter intuitive and there are two green
marks. I picked the wrong one and touched bottom but was able to back
off.

For any Loopers still coming north, we just arrived in Manasquan, Glimmer
Glass anchorage. After following the entire New Jersey ICW, we had no
problem. We draft 4'6" and "touched" once. We did time our travel from
mid-rising to mid falling tide. Mostly we watched the markers (that may
explain the touch) but there are descrepancies with both our Navionics
Chartplotter and the Maptech charts to the markers and sailing lines, watch
closely.
