18 January 2011 Safety Notice regarding Range Structures depicted on Electronic Charts
The U.S. Coast Guard has become aware that the information used to chart range structures may not be of sufficient accuracy and as such may depict a range line inaccurately on an electronic navigation chart (ENC). Mariners are advised to use extreme caution and not rely solely on ranges or any other aid to navigation as an exclusive means of navigation.
Comment submitted by Bob423 - Oct 19th While everything said here is true, I've found that once you sight the range markers and note where you're at relative to the range line on the chartplotter (on-line, to left or right, etc.), you can then use the chartplotter to stay on the range line. This is especially helpful when the range markers are behind you. Click here to comment on this Navigation Update
