Crossing the Gulf Stream - Keys to Cuba

Straits-of-FL-Graphic-2.jpgSimilar to the crossing between Florida and the Bahamas, a 2- to 3-knot current runs through the Straits of Florida between the Florida Keys and the North Coast of Cuba. The angle is different and reverse currents make up for much of the course offset, but the same precautions for "wind against stream" apply. An excerpt of the new Waterway Guide edition Cuba Bound:

It is important to remember before leaving for, or returning from, Cuba at any point on the Florida Keys that the prevailing easterly winds are in opposition to the eastward flowing Gulf Stream, and will produce quite difficult wave conditions during strong weather. If the forecast is for winds over 15 knots, you are wise to sit tight until they moderate. Waiting until a front has passed and then sailing from the Keys with calm to light SE winds makes for a safer passage. SE winds are at right angles to the Gulf Stream and don’t create large waves.

There is no need to compensate for the easterly set of the Gulf Stream. Get across it as quickly as you can and adjust when you get close to the Cuban coast. The west-setting countercurrent and favorable winds will help. It’s worth repeating that timing your arrival for Marina Hemingway to between sunrise and midmorning is a good idea due to calmer winds, favorable light for navigating the entrance and availability of customs personnel to clear you in to the country.

Summer weather involves depressions building on the same frequency as northers, (i.e., every 3 to 7 days), but if you monitor the weather, there is a warning period of several days in which to avoid them. These depressions can develop into hurricanes, usually in September and October, the most dangerous months to cruise in Cuba.

Cuba-Bound-150.jpgIn summary, study the weather prior to your departure. Seek advice from experts prior to getting underway, know your limitations and your vessel’s tolerances.

For those with more time and who wish to explore both Varadero and Havana, a good route is to cross from Marathon in the Keys to Varadero, spend time there, and then overnight the 90 nm to Marina Hemingway near Havana. This has the advantage of crossing the Florida Straits and Gulf Stream at a more favorable angle for sailboats and trawlers.
